06/28/2001 Entry: "Unusual Sounds." My friend Sherilyn pointed me towards a downloadable Virtual Theramin from the BBC. Much fun. Such a serene and haunted instrument . Not to be outdone, I counter with the Electronic Sackbut, considered the first modern synthesizer, invented in 1945 in Canada by Hugh Le Caine. While its sound was a little more variable, it wasn't necessarily as portable, either. As far as I know, despite its fans, it has yet to return with a similar popularity.
