10/29/2001 Entry: "It's the Cheese, Gromit!" This is the thickest, wheatiest, most nut-encrusted "sourdough" bread I've ever had. And since when were ham and turkey included as two of the four cheeses on my sandwich? Then again, what do I expect from a deli chain whose name includes misplaced apostrophe's?
Replies: 2 comments Heh, I can only assume you mean Specialty's, whose name has bothered me since I first saw it five years ago. Yummy cinnamon rolls, tho'. I like that Angry Flower link...the artist doesn't address, I notice, what to do with plural possessives, or even singular nouns that end in 's'. The Chicago Manual of Style disagrees with my high school English teacher, who disagrees with Merriam Webster, and my boyfriend and I even had an argument about it when "Bridget Jones's Diary" came out. Can't ANYONE give me a definitive answer? Posted by Huntington @ 10/31/2001 11:58 AM PST Bravo, you guessed it! From now on I'm sticking to Lee's. Who is the owner of that chain of delicatessens? Lee is. If there were a Mr. or Ms. Specialty who owned the place, I'd gladly post a retraction. Ugh, even their website makes my apostrophe gland twitch.... Posted by Casey @ 10/31/2001 01:00 PM PST |
