04/10/2002 Entry: "Institutional Food."

As we walked back from the Sales Training Meeting (and no, I'm not trained to sell now) with our box lunches, a co-worker mentioned that we're eating three meals today on the corporate bill. I realize it's true: buffet hotel breakfast before a morning session on Customer Relationship Management (with plenty of coffee, por supuesto) and dinner tonight with our East Coast manager. I'm reminded of someone I worked with who never ate food the company provided, because it left you somehow beholden to the company, having broken bread with your employers. Like your eating with the Godfather: "Leave the gun, Take the Cannoli."

I have no such problems. Are you gonna finish that dessert?

Speaking of being fed, the Boyfriend pointed me towards a story about Prison Loaf, fed to misbehaving prison inmates for a week at at time. What's in it? (Ingredients listed for three loaves.)

  • 6 slices whole wheat bread, finely chopped
  • 4 ounces imitation cheddar cheese, finely grated
  • 4 ounces raw carrots, finely grated
  • 12 ounces spinach, canned, drained
  • 2 cups dried Great Northern Beans, soaked, cooked and drained
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 6 ounces potato flakes, dehydrated
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 8 ounces powdered skim milk
  • 4 ounces raisins

Wait, wait...this is used as punishment? I think this was the vegetarian entree I had for Thanksgiving Dinner last year. I'll have to try making it and will let you know the results.

Yeah, well you best be reducing the quantity if you intend to make that: I sure as hell ain't touching it. Not even if you added meat to it...
