A Cloudy Observation

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

At the end of every Labor Day Weekend, a dense cloud rolls in all over San Francisco.

I just realized…it's not fog; it's playa dust from everyone returning home.

QotD: Can’t Get You Out of My Head

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment?  What album is it from?
Submitted by Lox Ly

I didn't have anything stuck in my head until I saw this. Now I've got Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" stuck in there. Damn. Thanks a lot, Vox.

Update: actually a number of songs cycle through my head, all the time. I once made a double CD of songs that had stuck in my head for a week-long period. Which only helped to reinforce all those songs getting stuck in my head again.

But really, at the moment the song that's running in my head is "Down in the Park" by Gary Numan (or Tubeway Army, to be specific), off of Replicas. I just caught him in concert last week and am feeling slightly bolstered in my Gothness. (Even if I am wearing khakis again today.)

Dear Internets: I need to learn to text if I intend to moblog. (And a camera phone wouldn't hurt either.)

(Edit: On the upside, I just sent that whole message using T9. But I still need to learn how to make capital letters on my phone. Did I mention I have a cell phone now? Did I mention it's The Boyfriend's old phone? Did I mention that it's larger than the cordless phones we have at home? So it's not that I'm not happy to see you, but that is, after all, just my phone.)

QOTD: I’m such a nerd because…

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

What’s the nerdiest thing about you?

I actually tend more towards the geek portion of the geek-nerd-dork trianglation. Nerd implies concentrated focus at the expense of another positive trait, such as hygiene or social skills. I have a bunch of geeky interests, I work in a geeky industry, My friends are mostly geeks–the nerds being the ones too busy with their Gundam models or solving Pi to 2 million digits to bother (or the folks whose phone calls I avoid.)

But for all the bad talking I’m doing about “nerdiness”, these are also the people who understand some topic so deeply, so completely as to block out everything else, at least for a while. Instead I’m just a geek of many flavors, master of none.

Though it’s pretty nerdy to use the word “triangulation” in a sentence.

Calling ’em like he sees them

Last night we saw “Playtime” at the Castro theater. All about a man who tries to meet a collegue in an ultra-modernist version of Paris and gets mixed up with a bunch of American tourists; madness ensues.

On the way out, I rounded the corner at 17th and Market and sidestepped around a
slightly dirty man with crazy hair coming the other way. He guttorally hissed (sounds contradictory, I know) at me:

“Aaaasssss-hhhhhhole….”

When you’ve spent the last two hours watching a French Modernist farce about living in a contemporary (for 1967) city, and you’re in khakis, and you’re carrying a cellphone, it’s hard to argue the point. Especially with someone who hasn’t seen soap in a few days. However, even though I thought it, I did not reply:

“Who isn’t?”

Greetings Vox. Nice to meet you.
